Waymo Secures Massive 5,500-Acre Proving Ground to Accelerate AV Testing
Waymo has intensified its expansion by acquiring a 5,500-acre proving ground in Arizona previously owned by Apple’s shell company. The move underscores Waymo's commitment to scaling commercial robotaxi operations as Apple exits the automotive hardware race.
In a significant consolidation of power in the autonomous vehicle (AV) sector, Alphabet-owned Waymo has purchased a massive 5,500-acre testing facility in Arizona for $220 million. The property, located near Wittmann, was previously held by Route 14 Investment Partners LLC, a shell company widely known to be associated with Apple’s defunct "Special Projects Group."
The acquisition marks the end of one chapter and the expansion of another. While Apple famously shuttered its internal car project earlier this year to pivot toward generative AI, Waymo is doubling down on physical deployment. This particular proving ground is a sophisticated environment designed to simulate complex urban and suburban driving scenarios, giving Waymo the space needed to stress-test its Driver technology without the constraints of public road regulations.
As Waymo continues to scale its operations in Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, having exclusive access to a site originally designed for the "Apple Car" provides a strategic advantage. The sheer scale of the 5,500-acre site—larger than many small towns—allows for high-speed testing, extreme weather simulation, and the development of more complex fleet management logistics. While the software competition in AVs remains fierce, the physical infrastructure to prove safety is becoming increasingly scarce and valuable.
