Gamification of the Drive: Tesla Introduces Streaks for FSD Engagement
Tesla has introduced 'Streaks' and advanced usage statistics to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) suite. These gamification elements are designed to encourage consistent engagement with their ADAS features.
Tesla is borrowing a page from social media apps like Duolingo and Snapchat by introducing "Streaks" to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. The new update allows drivers to track how many miles or days they have continuously used the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), turning the act of supervised driving into a quantifiable achievement.
While seemingly playful, this feature serves a critical function for Tesla’s data-gathering machine. The more consistently users engage FSD, the more "edge case" data Tesla can collect to train its neural networks. By gamifying the experience, Tesla incentivizes drivers to keep the system active even in routine scenarios, potentially increasing the stickiness of the $99-per-month subscription model.
Critics, however, raise concerns about the safety of gamifying safety-critical systems. The psychological urge to "maintain a streak" could lead drivers to keep the system engaged in environments where human intervention would be safer. As ADAS continues to bridge the gap between human control and full autonomy, the industry must carefully weigh the benefits of increased usage against the risks of driver over-reliance.
