Lethal Autonomy: Fury Fighter Drone Executes First Air-to-Air Missile Strike
The U.S. Air Force has achieved a milestone in unmanned combat by firing a live AMRAAM missile from a YFQ-44A Fury drone. This successful test validates the 'Collaborative Combat Aircraft' (CCA) program, where autonomous wingmen operate alongside manned fighters.
Aerial warfare is undergoing a radical shift toward autonomous systems, as demonstrated by the U.S. Air Force’s recent live-fire test. For the first time, an AIM-120 AMRAAM missile was successfully launched and tracked its target from a YFQ-44A Fury, a drone developed under the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) initiative. This test proves that autonomous platforms can not only fly wingman missions but can also execute lethal weapon deployments under AI control.
The CCA program aims to solve the "mass" problem in modern air forces—the high cost of manned stealth fighters like the F-35 makes it difficult to field a large enough fleet to overwhelm a sophisticated adversary. By pairing one manned fighter with several autonomous "Fury" drones, the Air Force can project more power at a lower cost and with less risk to human pilots. These drones are designed to carry sensors, jam enemy radar, and, as confirmed by this test, engage enemy aircraft directly.
What differentiates the Fury from previous drones is its level of autonomy.
