Eyes in the Sky: Northrop Grumman to Lead Space Force GMTI Program

The U.S. Space Force is accelerating its efforts to dominate the "ultimate high ground" with the official naming of its Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI) program. Northrop Grumman has been selected as the prime contractor for the initiative, which aims to provide persistent, space-based surveillance of moving targets on Earth’s surface—a capability that was previously the domain of specialized aircraft like the E-8 JSTARS.

This shift to space-based GMTI is a cornerstone of Neo-Defense Tech. By moving these sensors to orbit, the military gains a global vantage point that is much harder for adversaries to intercept or jam. The program is part of a broader push for Space Domain Awareness (SDA), ensuring that the U.S. can not only see what is happening on the ground but also protect its assets in cislunar space.

The stakes are high. As adversaries like Russia weaponize AI for killer drones and cyberattack bots, the ability to track and intercept threats in real-time is critical. The GMTI program will work in tandem with other emerging technologies, such as collaborative combat aircraft (CCA) and uncrewed aerial logistics platforms like Textron’s SkyCourier UX. Together, these systems represent a new era of distributed, autonomous warfare where the line between space, air, and cyber defense is increasingly blurred.
