Waymo Takes the Lead in Texas Autonomous Vehicle Registrations

The race for autonomous supremacy has a new leaderboard in Texas. Recent data from a state-mandated AV tracker reveals that Waymo is significantly outperforming competitors in registration numbers. This transparent accounting provides the clearest look yet at how many robotaxis and self-driving trucks are actually operational on public roads.

While Tesla continues to market its "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) software to consumer vehicles, Waymo’s strategy focusing on dedicated, geo-fenced commercial robotaxi services is yielding tangible dominance in registration volume. Waymo has also recently launched its newest robotaxi model, the Chinese-made Ojai minivan, engineered specifically for high-frequency urban ridesharing and profitability.

However, scaling is not without hurdles. Waymo recently had to pause services in Atlanta and San Antonio due to localized flooding, highlighting that even the most advanced autonomous systems still struggle with extreme weather events. Despite these setbacks, the registration data suggests that Waymo is the current leader in the push toward a fully driverless future.
