The conflict in Ukraine has been described as the "first great robot war," and a significant part of that story is the deployment of autonomous ground vehicles (UGVs). Forterra, an American robotics firm, has reportedly deployed over 100 self-driving ATVs to the front lines. These are not just remote-controlled toys; they are sophisticated autonomous systems capable of navigating treacherous terrain without direct human guidance.

These robots are solving the "last mile" problem of modern warfare. In areas where traditional trucks would be spotted and destroyed by drones, these low-profile, autonomous ATVs carry ammunition, supplies, and medical equipment to frontline troops. Perhaps most importantly, they are being used for CASEVAC (Casualty Evac) missions, extracting wounded soldiers from "hot zones" where sending a human-driven vehicle would be a suicide mission.

The success of Forterra’s units demonstrates a shift in robotics from delicate lab machines to "ruggedized" autonomy. These systems must handle mud, shell craters, and electronic warfare (EW) jamming that often severs the link between human operators and drones. By utilizing "dead reckoning" and local sensor processing, these UGVs can continue their missions even when GPS is jammed, marking a new era of resilient, autonomous logistics.
