The U.S. Navy has awarded Gecko Robotics its largest deal to date, utilizing climbing robots and AI to perform predictive maintenance on its fleet of ships.
Robotics is increasingly becoming the backbone of naval industrial hygiene and maintenance. Gecko Robotics has recently secured a landmark five-year deal with the U.S. Navy, representing the service's largest commitment to robotic inspection technology to date. The partnership focuses on utilizing Gecko’s fleet of wall-climbing robots to inspect the steel hulls and components of Navy vessels with granular precision.
These robots are equipped with advanced sensors that can "see" through paint and metal to detect subsurface corrosion or structural weaknesses that are invisible to the human eye. The data collected is then processed through an AI-driven digital twin platform, allowing the Navy to transition from reactive repairs to a predictive maintenance model. Instead of waiting for a leak to occur, engineers can accurately forecast when a specific section of a ship’s hull will need reinforcement.
This deployment solves two critical problems: safety and speed. Traditionally, sailors or contractors had to build massive scaffolding and enter hazardous confined spaces to perform these inspections—a process that is both dangerous and time-consuming. By automating this process, the Navy can keep ships in the water for longer periods, maintaining high levels of fleet readiness in an increasingly volatile global maritime environment.
